By selecting the service in MDaemon’s Email Server settings, you are set up and protected in minutes. **Why use the service?** The data is curated by Spamhaus’ world-class Research and Engineering Team, whose principal motivation is to make the internet a safer place. Every day, 13 billion SMTP connections, 3 million domains, and 18 thousand malware samples are analysed to safeguard against malware, phishing, botnets, spam, and more. Spamhaus’ DNSBLs are composed of continuously updated IP, Domain & Hash data which is made available using Spamhaus’ Data Query Service (DQS). As soon as a threat is identified, you are protected. This query-based service protects against the majority of spam and other email-borne threats at the SMTP gateway. **How the data is used** The current implementation is checking the DQS service during the spam filter processing along with all the other spam filter rules.  When a DQS rule matches, points are added to the overall spam score.  MDaemon allows 2 thresholds to be configured. The first rejects messages that are determined to be spam during the initial SMTP session, and for messages that pass the initial scan, the second performs an additional queue-based scan and flags the message as spam. The IP address is assessed first at SMTP connect, to get rid of most of the rubbish. When an email is blocked, the sender will immediately receive a notification, ensuring that emails do not lie unread in junk folders for weeks. Anything not blocked can then be filtered by content, which is checked against our domain and hash data. This staged email filtering process is considered best practice: 1. Remove obvious spam sent from known botnets and spammers' IP addresses. 2.
